The great reformer, Martin Luther, once stated: “The Bible is like a lion; it does not need to be defended; just let it loose and it will defend itself.” Indeed, history has proven that the Bible has the inherent ability to defend its own claims. The Holy Bible is like no other book ever written. Its uniqueness has gripped the common man. Its survival throughout the centuries has astounded historians. Its accuracy has silenced its greatest skeptics. The Bible contains 66 books written by over 40 authors over a span of 1,600 years. The Bible has been translated into over 1,400 languages. The impact that the Bible has made upon human civilization can scarcely be measured. No other book has ever come close.
In addition, no other book has come under such intense scrutiny as the Bible. Evil men throughout the centuries have attempted to banish the Bible. Every one of them have failed. The Foxe’s Book of Martyrs details the persecution many early Christians faced for believing in the Bible. No other book or people have been so vilified as the Bible and its adherents. Consider the foolishnes of the French philosopher, Voltaire. To his eternal chagrin, he once stated: “Another century and there will not be a Bible on the earth.” Despite his strongest hopes to see the Bible's influence upon man eradicated, his prediction failed. Interestingly, fifty years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society moved their operating headquarters into his former house. In the ultimate act of irony, Voltaire's own printing presses were used to print thousands of Bibles in a multitude of languages.
Today, despite centuries of proof that the Bible's claims and historical record are true, many still doubt the Bible's accuracy. But as followers of Christ, we can trust every word and every claim of the Bible. After standing the test of time, of criticism, of ridicule, and of skepticism, no one has ever been able to disprove its claims. The rocks are broken into pieces, and the Word of God still endures.
Prayer: “Father, Your Word is truth. Thank you for the Word of God that instructs me in the pathways of righteousness and salvation.”
